Cervical Disc Disease

The cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae and many bundle of nerves. The spine in this area have smaller bones compared to the other parts of the spine. Most often you have heard about herniated neck or cervical arthritis. But there are other forms of cervical disc diseases as well.

The disc or cushions of the vertebra joints in the cervical are called cervical discs. They are prone to many disorders like aging, stress or injury of any kind in the spine of the area. Lets have a look at all kinds of cervical disc diseases:

1)Herniated Nucleus Pulposus: This is also commonly called HNP. In this cervical disc disease there is an extension of the disc materials from the posterior region of your vertebrae joints. The materials of the joints bulge out from the common radius of the spinal joint.

2)Degenerative Disc Disease: This disorder of the spine is called DDD. In this condition, the following cases may happen- nuclear degradation, loss of disc height, or degenerative annular tears. All this happen due to excessive pressure on the spinal joints by body weight and wrong postures of the body for long hours.

3)Internal Disc Disruption: Also called IDD, a condition in which the disc suffers from annular fissuring and there is no deformation of the external disc. In this disease the internal disc portion is susceptible to deformation.

4)Cervical Radiculopathy: In this disorder, the nerve roots are injured due to foraminal stenosis or due to motor abnormalities.

All these cervical ailments can lead to tremendous pain and other complications in the neck area. The deformation of the cervical spine is the most common cause of spondylosis. There are treatment options for all these cervical disorders and various advanced surgical methods have also been invented for better cure.

Cervical Dysplasia

Cervical cancer among women have become very common. Its very ironical to see that with more and more education on diseases, people are attracting the most dangerous ones. Being educated and most up to date with all knowledge people suffer from so many complications only because they are bit careless in some of their activities.

Cervical cancer is one such disease for which certain lifestyle is responsible. Cervical Dysplasia is the abnormal growth of the cells of the cervix. The squamous cells of the cervix often grow abnormally and become the precancerous element of cervical cancer.
This particular growth of cells of the cervix is called- cervical dysplasia.

What are the causes of dysplasia?
Cervical dysplasia is caused for various reasons like-

 *HPV Infection
A greater percentage of women suffering from cervical dysplasia are infected with HPV infections. There are more than 80 viral strains in this group of Human papillomavirus (HPV). Most of the viruses are sexually transmitted, while some of them are due to genetically malfunctions.

*HIV Infection
If a woman is infected with HIV virus there is greater risk of developing the pre-symptoms of cervical cancer called dysplasia.

*Smoking
It may sound disastrous for those who smoke but its fact that Nicotine as well as cotinine and other chemicals that are produced from burning tobacco tend to increase the risk of dysplasia.

*High-risk sexual behavior
To engage in sex before the age of 18, or having many partners for sex or having   intercourse with a man having multiple sex partners cause the risk of having dysplasia.

*Poor Nutrition
Poor nutrition lacking vital vitamins, minerals etc also play a role in increasing the cervical cancer. Even the poor diet triggers weakening of immune system and the risk of virus attack increases.

Thus, there are some of the cause of cervical cancer or dysplasia. So, we are not aware of such factors as the main reasons of many other complications; alas! we still perform some of these activities.

Cervical Erosion

Perhaps God was right in forbidding the fruit. Eve tasted it and the human race began with the biological happening of mensuration. The woman body is the most prone to many sort of complications. There are mensuration problems, conceiving problems, breast problems etc.

The anatomical structure of the reproductive organ of a woman consists of vagina, cervix, womb, the fallopian tubules and the oviduct. These organs are interrelated and adjoined with one opening to another. The cells of the womb are different from that of the cervix. Cervix is the joining area of the womb or uterus and the vagina. The squamous cells are present in the cervix. When the cells of the womb grow abnormally and come over to the cervical region, the squamous cells get covered and this complication is called the cervical erosion.

When you go for smear test, the nurse or the doctor will collect the sample of the cells from the cervix with a stick and examine them. If they were found to be those like of the wombs then its confirmed that you are suffering from cervical erosion.

The reasons behind the growth of these cells are not confirmed, yet certain predisposing factors are considered responsible for the cervical erosion. These factors are like taking of birth control pills, hormonal disorder, in the body, intercourse, foreign elements in the vagina, having multiple sex partners, speculum insertions, infection of some herpes, unmoved tampons etc. The risk increases with the use of chemical vaginal agents, contraceptive creams etc.

For treatments of cervical erosions mostly doctors prefer to leave them untouched by any medicines since they have been found to heal themselves in the course of time. At severe conditions if the patient feels some kind of irritation or other problems, local anesthesia or cautery is applied for healing the area.

Cervical Headgear

The cervical headgears are modern form of headgears that are used more comfortably to check the extra growth of mandibular and maxillary bones in orthodontics. In this treatment the head gears are put on in such a fashion that it exerts pressure on the upper jaw and controls its growth.

Headgears have been in use since past 75 years typically for people who have overbites. The headgear holds back the growing of mandibular jaw and allows your lower jaw to balance with the upper one. Cervical headgear is required to wear by the patient approximately twelve-twenty two hours a day for effective results in balancing and managing the overbites. And you need to continue its wear for at least twelve to fifteen months or more. It all depends on the severity and the growth rate of the overbite along with the age of the patient.

The cervical headgear typically consists of three main parts:
The first one is called Face bow. Its fixed to the rear upper as well as lower molar. here can also be low and upper face bows too, to wear independently.

The second component is called the head cap. It has straps to fit around the head. Its then attached with the face bow with the help of strings or elastic band. Sometimes for comfort and safety additional straps may also be fitted.

The third one is called Attachment, which is actually the set of those springs and bands used to fix the head cap and the face bow. The orthodontic surgeon will help you learn the tactics of wearing them. For one or two days you may find it difficult but once you get used to it, you can very easily wear it in a minute or less time. Thus, cervical headgear can give you the perfect smile you want.
